Preparation Grade:
1. Value Drawing Packet
2. Drawing with Left Brain, Grid Exercise (Picasso Line)
Project Grade- Large Charcoal Drawings
Principle/Element Focus: Value (must use all values 1-7), Contrast
Material Focus: Charcoal, chalk pastels in greyscale
Technique Focus: Drawing proportions using a grid & Black and White photo reference.
Teacher Tips: Some years, I allow students to choose their own photo reference. Other times, I have chosen a specific subject (i.e. shoes) and had them set up their own compositions and photograph them. I prefer that they have a photo reference that they shot personally. I usually have them start with value 7, then use white chalk for value 1, then alternate for the in-betweens with some pastels. Beginners are usually very timid with the amount of product they put on the page so I encourage to put more down than they might initially want to get the right texture on the "tooth" charcoal paper. Blend, blend, blend! Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty! Use gummy erasers, blending tools, layer your values! I seal with setting spray and/or laminate paper as a protector.
