Preparation Grade: 1. Cultural Mask Powerpoint
2. Choose a culture, Research & Sketch ideas
Project Grade- 3D Mask using recycled materials
Bonus Project Grade: Research & Reflection Paper
Principle/Element Focus: Form & Unity
Material Focus: Anything they can think of! Cardboard, newspaper, wires, "dumpster dive," paint
Technique Focus: Building 3D forms that command a presence into real space
Teacher Tip: I wanted my students to break out of their comfort zone and learn more about the art and stories of other cultures. They researched masks of many different cultures and people throughout history form Mayans to Italians to Greek Antiquity, from Russians to the Japanese. Once they chose a specific culture, they had to dive into make a mask that represented a character that was significant in that time/group of people. They were also allowed to change certain parts to put their own spin on the mask if desired so it was "inspired" by a culture but also their own ideas. I LOVE seeing what up-cycled materials they add on to their base mask. One student used old technology wires for eyelashes, another used old headphones for eyes and old CD's for a butterfly headdress.
